The Whole Backstage Theatre
Launches Search for First Executive Director

The Whole Backstage Theatre, Alabama’s oldest continually operating community theatre and a cultural cornerstone for more than 50 years, has announced the launch of a search for its first-ever Executive Director.

For half a century, The Whole Backstage has operated through the dedication of volunteers, producing high-quality theatrical performances, youth programs, and community events. As the theatre looks toward the future, the Board of Directors has recognized the need for professional leadership to ensure sustainability, strengthen community partnerships, and expand fundraising and development efforts.

“The Whole Backstage has thrived because of the incredible commitment of volunteers and patrons,” said Claire Richards, current President of the Board. “We are excited to take this next step in hiring an Executive Director who will help us grow, engage even more deeply with the community, and carry the theatre forward for the next 50 years.”

The Executive Director will serve as the theatre’s front-of-house leader, focusing on nonprofit management, fundraising, community engagement, and operational excellence. This role is distinct from artistic direction and production management, which will remain volunteer-led. The new Executive Director will work closely with the existing Office Manager to ensure a seamless experience for patrons and to strengthen the theatre’s business and community presence.

Applications are now open and a job description can be found on the theatre’s website. Interested candidates should submit a cover letter and resume to support@wholebackstage.com. Applications will be reviewed as they are received, with priority given to early applicants. The search committee’s goal is to fill the position at the beginning of 2026.
