willsmith_gsv@bellsouth.net Though young people's creativity is one of our main concerns, the true backbone of our organization is our adult volunteers, assisted by the strong backs of the teenagers. They do much of the work associated with producing plays, selling memberships and maintaining the building, and oversee all of the work. They are also our directors, actors and graphic artists. The Whole Backstage has always been a completely volunteer organization, supported by a true working board with little turnover, and we have always operated "in the black." This Board includes lawyers, contractors, storeowners, dance teachers, businessmen, artists, all of them united in supporting our activities and our outreach. Perhaps their loyalty and hard work is in response to the creativity and synergy they also feel.
Volunteers work as little or as much as they want to. There is no pressure. The volunteer determines what he or she will do. In most cases, people get involved in several aspects such as carpentry in building a scene, painting, operating sound equipment, or putting up advertising banners throughout Marshall County.
Some other things a volunteer could do is; help with makeup, dressing, and hair,
assist with building maintenance including electrical, heating and air
conditioning, and plumbing; prompt actors during rehearsals; take reservations,
sew or alter a costume, work with the computer, file, write letters and
newsletter articles, take photographs and video, and of course, act, sing,
direct, or play a musical instrument.
