Synopisis:
Place: Maycomb, Alabama
Time: 1935
Seen through the eye of two children, Scout, the
story's protagonist, and her brother Jem, the play is set in their
hometown of Maycomb, Alabama during the depression era in 1935. A white
woman accuses a black man of rape. Though he is obviously innocent, the
outcome of his trial is such a foregone conclusion that no lawyer will
take the case except for Atticus Finch, the children's father. His
compassionate defense, in and out of the courtroom, cost him much, but
earns him the respect and admiration of his children. Set amidst the
racism and poverty of the 1930's south, the story takes us to the roots
of human behavior; innocence and experience, kindness and cruelty, love
and hatred, humor and pathos.
