The ingeniously constructed
play offers a skillful blending of gasp-inducing thrills and spontaneous
laughter. It deals with the devious machinations of a writer of thrillers,
Sidney Bruhl, whose recent plays have been flops, and who is prepared to go to
any lengths to have another success. A possible break in his fortunes occurs
when he receives, from a writing student, a script which he decides has the
potential to be a Broadway hit. Sidney’s plan, devised despite his wife’s
horror, is to offer to collaborate with the student and then kill him and steal
his script. Thereafter, suspense mounts steadily as the plot begins to twist
and turn with devilish cleverness and shocking surprises.
Cue magazine said,
