FORTY-SECOND STREET

Music by Harry Warren
Lyrics by Al Dubin
Book by Michael Stewart & Mark Bramble
Based on the Novel by Bradford Ropes

FORTY-SECOND STREET is a big, bold musical, set in 1933, that celebrates the stuff dreams are made of. The curtain rises on Andy Lee, the dance director who is auditioning kids for the chorus of a new show Pretty Lady. Young Peggy Sawyer has missed the audition because she has spent an hour trying to muster up her courage at the stage door. Billy , the romantic lead, tries to help her see the producer, Julian Marsh, but Julian has no use for latecomers. Julian is worried about Dorothy Brock, the leading lady whose last hit was ten years earlier, but whose beau, Abner Dillon, is backing the show.

Just then, Dorothy and Abner arrive, and Julian suggests that Dorothy audition. Abner reminds Julian that Dorothy does not have to try out for anyone. Peggy has lunch with some of the girls at the Gypsy Tea Kettle, and they are amused by Peggy’s naivete. They dance back to the theater and Julian, walking by, sees how talented Peggy is. He hires her for the chorus.

Peggy faints during rehearsal and is brought ro Dorothy’s dressing room where Pat Denning, Dorothy’s real boyfriend, is waiting. Dorothy walks in, and misleading what she sees, thinks that Pat is two-timing her. The cast throws a party, and Dorothy has to much to drink. She tells Abner to take his money and leave. Abner is ready to close the show, but the kids are able to talk him out of it.

Pretty Lady opens spectacularly, but when Dorothy rushes on stage, she falls and breaks her ankle. Panic spreads through the cast, and finally they turn to Peggy to keep the show alive. Peggy, the novice, has exactly 36 hours to learn 25 pages, 6 songs and 10 dance numbers. As Julian says, by the next evening he’ll have either a live leading lady or a dead chorus girl! At long last, the Broadway curtain rises on "Pretty Lady." The show is a fabulous hit, and Peggy Sawyer is a sudden sensation. Broadway is a truly magical place once again.
